Leicester Tigers future secure after year like no other

Club chairman Peter Tom - ‘We look forward to welcoming everyone back safely whenever it is possible to do so’

The Tigers ground

Management at Leicester Tigers say the club is safe despite the multi-million pound hit of having no fans in fixtures for more than year.

They said the Premiership club’s future is secure following a combination of increased investment, bank support, Government assistance and the loyalty of fans.

The past year has also seen efficiency savings, including redundancies, to bring down overheads.

Management said as the best-supported club in Premiership Rugby, Tigers had been hit harder than most, with no matchday supporters admitted to the Mattioli Woods Welford Road stadium since February 2020.

Hospitality sales, stadium hire, bar and food sales, and revenues from the stadium club shop have also been wiped out.

It comes as latest official club finances to the end of June 2020 – just four months into the pandemic – showed rugby income was down 43 per cent year-on-year at £2.8 million.

Overall income – including TV and Premiership deals, and commercial operations – was down 14 per cent at £17.2 million.

Last summer the club predicted a £10 million hit if crowds were unable to return by the start of 2021.
