Cinema-themed cocktail bar to return to Newcastle after taking over popular bar

The Intermezzo bar has been reopened by Paul Pringle and Mark Wrightson

A popular bar that started life in a trendy Newcastle cinema has returned to the city after three years away.

Intermezzo is reopening down the road from its original site, after the company's owners acquired the Bierrex bar, on Pilgrim Street.

Intermezzo originally opened inside the Tyneside Cinema but was forced to close after its lease expired and the cinema's owners decided to run the bar themselves. It was forced to close in 2016.

Its new venue has been a popular destination for drinkers in the city for sometime, having previously been home to Bierrex and Popolo, before the latter moved to the quayside.

The business has been acquired by Paul Pringle and Mark Wrightson and after two weeks the site has been refurbished and has reopened under the Intermezzo name.

Mr Pringle said: "We took over this lease last month, did a quick refurbish and made it Intermezzo.

"It is a new twist on it and we want to bring the old clients, the coffee, the music and the vibe back to a site I always rated as great.

"We have bought Ray’z and The Poison Cabinet in the basement, and we are leaving the speakeasy as it is."
