Indie hospitality sector in Wales say job cuts are equivalent to 20 Airbus redundancy announcements

Restaurant, pub and cafe bosses say more than 30,000 jobs will go - with many cuts already made

Restaurant and pubs pushing for reopening date

At least 30,000 job losses are expected in the independent hospitality sector with calls for an immediate date for inside opening and emergency assistance.

The Welsh Independent Restaurant Collective (WIRC) said a survey of 100 independent pubs, cafes, restaurants and event caterers had shown the scale of cuts - with half the jobs having already been lost.

They added that to put it in context these represent more than 20 times the job losses than currently proposed at Airbus Broughton - where over 1,400 roles are at risk.

The 100 firms questioned had made or plan to make around 900 redundancies.

A WIRC spokesman said: “Wales is the only one of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ nations that has not yet set a date for premises reopening inside.

“Whilst England have permitted all parts of premises to re-open, Scotland have made plain that the re-opening inside will be closely monitored and have given the date of July 15th for inside opening. Wales has provided no such indicative timetable.”

Its survey found only 32% of businesses say they will definitely open on an outside only basis from Monday.

A spokesman added: “We therefore urgently require a date that allows us to trade indoors this summer and gives us a chance to continue trading and retain some employment into winter 2020/21 and towards summer 2021. There is a rapidly disappearing window of summer opportunity as we head towards August.”
