An independent brunch and coffee business based in Derby has beaten off competition from major brands to win a prestigious national retail award.

BEAR, which serves speciality coffee, brunch, cocktails and craft beer from morning until evening, was crowned a winner at the recently held Revo Gold Awards for the º£½ÇÊÓƵ retail industry.

It secured the Re:tale award for its recent strategic partnership with the Intu Derby shopping centre. It was selected ahead of fellow nominees Primark, IKEA and JD Sports.

For the Re:tale category, jury members considered examples of strategic partnerships between occupiers (retailers, food, beverage and wider leisure operators) and owners, which were delivering “innovative customer first approaches benefiting stake-holders or occupiers, having demonstrated continuous innovation and delivering an outstanding and differentiated customer proposition”.

Earlier this year, BEAR, which is based in Iron Gate, Derby, opened a brand new outlet in Intu Derby, as part of campaign by the shopping centre to add more independent retailers to its offering.

Craig Bunting, who co-founded BEAR with Michael Thorley, said: “We’re inconceivably proud to not only be recognised for such a prestigious award but to actually win against such front-runners in the retail industry.

“It feels surreal but also like a huge leap forward for BEAR and for the whole indie business community.
