How Leicester coffee shop chain Bru is disrupting coffee shop culture and contributing to high street renaissance

The group even opened two new stores during the pandemic – in Reading and London’s Docklands

The boss of an independent coffee shop chain says they have bucked the downturn in the hospitality sector and come back fighting as the º£½ÇÊÓƵ opens up again.

The owner of Leicester-based Bru Coffee and Gelato said they were reaping the rewards of the determination that they have shown over the last 18 months and their ability to adapt the way they work since.

As well as making improvements and streamlining operations at their Granby Street Leicester store, Bru has continued with its national ambitions.

Since opening the first coffee shop in 2014, it has opened five more across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and has bold ambitions to increase their franchises over the next few years.

The group even opened two new stores during the pandemic – in Reading and London’s Docklands – something managing director Junaid Makda appreciates was a big risk.

He said: “We had big ambitions for the expansion of Bru and we decided early on to remain committed to driving forward with our plans.

“We completely refurbished two of our stores – in Leicester and Walthamstow – and we also bought forward maintenance work at our other stores to utilise the downtime, turning the challenge into an opportunity.

“The experiential element is important to Bru and customers are loving the newly refurbished stores.
