A coaching inn that has witnessed a sloshed Shakespeare and a king inspiring his troops is now a home oozing history, reports Alison Jones

The Old Falcon in Church Street, Bidford-On-Avon.

The Old Falcon in Church Street, Bidford On Avon, near Alcester, is an old coaching inn that can boast a number of famous customers.

William Shakespeare is reported to have drunk here then snoozed under a nearby crab tree to sleep it off. His patronage is commemorated in a stained glass window of him in the dining room.

King Charles II is also said to have addressed his followers on the eve of the battle of Worcester in December 1651 from the steps of the inn.

The Old Falcon forms a large wing of the building which is on the corner of Church Street and High Street

It has a wealth of period features including a Blue Lias stone exterior, leaded windows with handmade glass, exposed beams and roof timbers, original elm doors, fireplaces and stone mullion windows

Stone steps lead up from the high street to the front door which opens into an entrance lobby and reception hall with a wide staircase up to the first floor landing. A further staircase leads down to the cellar.

A drawing room features stone mullion windows overlooking the old market place, inglenook fireplace and exposed beams.

The dining room has exposed Blue Lias stone walls and windows to the front and back.
