Home Bargains invests £1m in new Chesterfield store

Discount brands including Poundland, Aldi and Lidl are continuing to pile pressure on big name supermarkets

Home Bargains in Clay Cross, Chesterfield

Discount chain Home Bargains has invested £1 million in a new store in Derbyshire.

The retailer, which sells everything from toys to homewares, sweets and perfume as well as fresh and frozen food, is opening a new store in Chesterfield, on Saturday, May 1.

The Clay Cross branch is creating 48 new jobs out of a team of 55, including some staff and management who have moved from other local stores.

Discount brands such as Home Bargains, Poundland, Aldi and Lidl are continuing to pile pressure on big name supermarkets, with Tesco recently reporting that its profits tumbled around a fifth over the past year after coronavirus costs of almost £900 million offset surging sales.

Tesco has pumped significant investment into keeping its prices low in a bid to match its cheaper chains, and launched an Aldi Price Match campaign last year.

The 15,350 sq ft Home Bargains Chesterfield store will join more than 500 outlets across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, with the business opening around 50 new stores a year. The chain is reported to have more than 5 million customers each week.

New store manager Katie Goddard said: “It’s a huge honour to be opening our new Clay Cross store this weekend and something that I’m exceptionally proud of.

“Having worked for Home Bargains for 11 years, working my way up from an in-store team member, this is certainly a special moment and one I’ll cherish for the rest of my career.
