Former JD Sports boss Peter Cowgill named first chairman of The Fragrance Shop

Mr Cowgill left JD Sports suddenly in May

Peter Cowgill resigned as executive chairman of JD Sports in May

The former long-serving boss of retail giant JD Sports has been named as the first non-executive chairman of The Fragrance Shop.

Peter Cowgill, who quit his role as executive chairman at the Bury-headquartered group suddenly in May, has taken up his new job with immediate effect.

At the time, his departure from JD Sports was described "as a consequence of an ongoing review of its internal governance and controls" and a decision to "accelerate the separation" of the roles of chair and chief executive.

In September, BusinessLive reported that JD Sports had agreed a £5.5m exit deal with its former boss.

On his new job, Mr Cowgill said: "I feel very privileged to take on this role at an exciting time for the business as it continues to execute its growth strategy.

"Against the post pandemic backdrop and current economic headwinds, The Fragrance Shop continues to perform because of its focus on innovation and ensuring it puts the customer and its members at the heart of everything it does.

"I look forward to working with them closely on its expansion plans - particularly in its digital business, as it furthers its international footprint and in support of category expansion through acquisition and organic growth."

"We’re looking forward to the counsel and experience Peter will bring as we expand and grow."
