Wax jacket fashion firm Barbour has teamed up with fellow North East business Fenwick to launch a pop-up cafe in the store.
The department store has opened Barbour Tea & Toasties, a cosy cafe decorated with quilted Barbour-style furnishing, serving tea in matching quilted cosies from now until . The concept – launched to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Liddesdale quilted jacket – has been brought to life by Fenwick’s restaurant team, with a menu created in collaboration with local, independent businesses, with cheese from Berwick Edge and tea from Ringtons to celebrate the region’s craftmanship.
The two family firms both have a rich heritage in the region, with a collective 272 years of history between them. Fenwick was founded in 1882 in Newcastle and Barbour was founded in in 1894. The menu boasts a range of regionally-named toasties including the Tyne and Moor Melt, filled with Berwick Edge cheese and Newcastle Brown Ale chutney; The North Eastern, a chicken katsu breaded chicken toastie with curry sauce, pickled cucumber and kewpie mayonnaise.
Other toasties include the Farm and Field, a Leverstock Farm mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and basil pesto toastie, the North Sea Scran which is filled with white crab meat, chives and a thermidor style sauce and finally the Howay the Ham, a classic ham and Berwick Edge cheese combination. Sweet treats will also be on hand such as a tartan brownie and quilted cupcakes.
