End of an era as Exeter caravan company owner retires after 48 years

Nick is already putting plans in place to enjoy his retirements after 48 years with the business

The owner of a landmark camper and caravan business which was set up by the granddad of Coldplay's Chris Martin has retired.

Nick Saunders was at the helm of Martins of Exeter for 48 years, but the time has come for him to hand over the legendary business.

The four acres of caravan sales space has been taken on by the a franchise of the Autosleeper Group, Marquis, who also bought the Plymouth branch of the business from Nick in 2017.

The business is known to be Devon's oldest caravan supplier.

The Coldplay front man's grandfather, John Besley Martin, founded Martins Caravans near Clyst St George in 1929, which was sold by his father in 1999 to Nick.

The 66-year-old, who started work at the company in 1972, said: "I started at Martins as a teenager. I was repairing caravans at Sandy Bay when a job came up in Martins.

"It's been a good life. It's been a great industry to work in and we have had many happy times."

when asked why the sale has come about, Nick said he was ready to retire and enjoy life while he is still "fit and healthy".
