A Bristol business is piloting the first recycling scheme in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ for batteries used in electric powered bikes and scooters.

Eco Recover, a new division of Hotwells-based e-bike and e-moped retailer EcoMove, will allow riders to drop off end-of-life lithium-ion batteries at its collection points in the South West.

The batteries will then be collected and recycled at the country’s only lithium-ion recycling facility in the Midlands, operated by Fenix Battery Recycling.

Previously the batteries from the power-assisted two-wheelers had to be exported to the US or Europe for recycling.

Eco Recover is hoping to reduce the carbon emissions in the treatment process by reducing transport, and it will carry out all of its collections with all-electric vehicles.

The two businesses will look to roll out the scheme out across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ following the South West trial.

John Dorman, co-founder of EcoMove said: "By joining forces with Fenix, our aim is to increase lithium-ion Battery recycling in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and lead the way in sustainability within the green transport sector.

“Through partnering with Eco Recover, businesses in the green transport sector can provide their customers with a sustainable recycling solution and play a more active role in the management of the Lithium-Ion batteries they produce.”
