The Derbion shopping centre in Derby is investing more than £2 million into its food court, with a new look, new brands and more seating.

The investment will increase seating capacity from around 650 to 800 and the space will be renamed the Food Terrace.

It will have new flooring and lighting, mobile charging points, recycling stations and baby and children feeding facilities including microwaves and bottle warmers.

Refurbishment work has started and should be completed by the autumn, with the area remaining open for customers throughout.

The first new business moving in will be American fried chicken brand Popeyes. The US chain recently announced it was planning hundreds of new jobs around the º£½ÇÊÓƵ at a string of new restaurants with thousands more jobs in the coming years.

It was founded in New Orleans in 1972, and has a New Orleans style menu featuring spicy chicken, chicken tenders, fried shrimp, and other regional items. It is now one of the world's biggest fast food chicken restaurants with more than 3,600 branches in the US and around the world.

It is expected to open in November and will sit alongside existing brands including Subway, GDK and KFC, as well as eight standalone restaurants, including Wagamama, Carluccio’s, Nando’s, Pizza Express, Fridays and Five Guys.

Derbion centre director Adam Tamsett said: “Our food court has always been a hugely popular destination within the centre, and this demand has only increased over the past two years.
