Number of branches is plunging across the country

Over the past decade, Devon has lost a third of its bank and building society branches.

In 2010 the area had around 280 branches but by 2019, that had fallen to around 185 - a 34% drop.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) include a fall in bank branches from around 245 to around 170, while the number of building society branches has dropped from around 35 to around 15.

South Hams, Teignbridge and Torridge have seen the biggest drops locally, with a 50% decrease.

The figures for numbers of branches come from the Annual Business Count, and are rounded to the nearest five for each area.

Across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, the number of bank and building society branches has dropped by 39% in a decade, from 16,955 in 2010 to 10,405 in 2019.

Some areas may now no longer have a local branch – both Isles of Scilly and Bolsover in Derbyshire have fewer than three branches (and possibly none).

People in all age groups are increasingly using internet banking.
