Department store chain Debenhams is poised to file for administration, it has been reported.

It is understood the struggling retailer could appoint administrators next week, having already placed business advisors KPMG on standby.

Debenhams has said it is “making contingency plans” in a bid to secure the future of the retailer, who employs around 22,000 people across its stores.

A spokesman said: “Like all retailers, Debenhams is making contingency plans reflecting the extraordinary current circumstances.

“Our owners and lenders remain highly supportive and whatever actions we may take will be with a view to protecting the business during the current situation.

“While our stores remain closed in line with Government guidance, and the majority of our store-facing colleagues have been furloughed, our website continues to trade and we are accepting customer orders, gift cards and returns.”

Appointing administrators could protect the company from legal claims from creditors during the period of the coronavirus crisis, which has led to the closure of all 152 stores in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

Debenhams fell into the hands of its lenders a year ago, following Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley’s failed takeover bid, giving control to a group of banks and hedge funds led by US firm Silver Point Capital.
