Strike date announced at Wilko distribution centres as row over 'harsh' contracts continues

About 1,800 employees will walk out

Almost 2,000 Wilko employees will strike next month in a row over "harsh new contracts" which would standardise weekend work.

Officials at the GMB Union claim the action at Wilko's distribution centres in Worksop, Nottinghamshire and Magor in South Wales, have the potential to "cripple" deliveries to stores across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

The union has confirmed about 1,800 workers will walk out from 6am on Friday, October 11 until 5.59am on Saturday, October 12 and the same times from Monday, October 14 to Tuesday, October 15.

Gary Carter GMB national officer, said: "It is sad that it has come to this. We have done everything we can to try to negotiate a reduction in the amount of weekend working, but the offer from management is not acceptable.

“Wilko has always considered itself a family company - yet they’re forcing contracts on staff that will seriously impose on family time and workers’ wellbeing.

“GMB members will stand together and show Wilko management how strongly we feel about these harsh new contracts.”

The dispute is over plans to standardise a seven-day working week, which differs from previous arrangements when weekend work was in response to demand.

More than 84 percent of union members casted votes in favour of strike action earlier this month.
