Cornwall holiday resort Whalesborough agrees deal for market garden

The luxury holiday park will use the fruit and vegetables to supply its on-site restaurant

A luxury Bude-based holiday resort has taken over a market garden so it can provide seasonal produce to customers. Landal Whalesborough Resort & Spa has agreed a deal for Neetfield Market Garden with previous owners, husband and wife Rosie and Tom Barclay.

The resort has taken back the lease on the land so it can provide its on-site restaurant - and its welcome hampers - with fruit and vegetables grown on the Whalesborough Estate near Marhamchurch.

The resort, which is taking on a team to tend to the new Whalesborough Market Garden, said it would embrace the Barclay’s no-dig method, meaning it will avoid the use of machinery, fertilisers or chemicals. Instead, it will use green manures and cover crops. Any excess produce will be used to supply local food banks, the holiday park said, and to feed Whalesborough’s resident alpacas, pigs, chickens and goats.

The Barclays, who took over the lease on the one-acre land from Whalesborough in August 2020, are moving on to set up a new market garden and hospitality business in Cornwall. According to the duo, they will continue to supply exisiting customers who include restaurants Outlaw’s Fish Kitchen and Outlaw’s New Road.

Ben Nolan-Stone, managing director of Whalesborough, said: “When Rosie and Tom came to us to let us know that they planned to move to a new site, we saw the immediate opportunity to add to and enhance our field-to-fork ethos.

“Over the last year this approach has seen us raise our own stock, providing The Weir restaurant with lamb and beef. Now, with the transfer of the market garden back to Whalesborough, we can add fresh fruit, herbs, vegetables, and even honey to the list of produce that’s raised, ripened or harvested from our own land."

In February, European holiday accommodation provider Landal GreenParks º£½ÇÊÓÆµ . The resort, which is set in 450 acres of coastal countryside, offers a range of 24-character cottages, barn conversions and its own 14th-century farmhouse. Onsite facilities include a restaurant, spa, gym, and swimming pools.
