The Cooperative has expanded its autonomous delivery service, with robots set to roll out across its second º£½ÇÊÓƵ town.

The Manchester-headquartered retailer, using robots from Starship Technologies, will see robot deliveries arrive in Northamptonshire today as it announced ambitions to use 300 robots by the end of 2021.

The rollout comes after Co-op became the first convenience retailer to use same-day robot delivery in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ when it partnered with Starship in 2018, it said, and currently serves eight Co-op stores in Milton Keynes.

The retailer said demand for Starship’s robot service has “continued to soar’’ during the pandemic, with numbers for Co-op’s products tripling in Milton Keynes in recent months.

Chris Conway, head of ecommerce at Co-op, said it has seen “big changes” in ecommerce this year, with “new customers using the channel that have never used it before”.

“We continue to look for new ways to innovate and expand access to our products and services to deliver a truly compelling offer for consumers.

“Our partnership with Starship enables Co-op to offer further availability, flexibility and choice to meet community shopping needs for on-demand convenience.”

He added: “Offering quality and value quickly, easily and conveniently is core to Co-op’s approach - delivering what our Members and customers want, when and where they need it.”
