Businesses allowed to stay open during coronavirus lockdown as winter virus battle reaches crucial stage

Most businesses will be forced to shut under latest Government restrictions - but some will stay open

Full list of businesses that must shut on January 5 - and what can remain open

Thousands of businesses in England are being forced to temporarily close again as the country enters its third national lockdown.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the news in a televised address after a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases, including the fast-spreading new variant.

The rules will replace the tier system and are expected to last until the middle of February.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is to announce a fresh business support package to help firms through the third lockdown, the Government has said.

Non-essential retailers can remain open for delivery and click-and-collect, while restaurants and pubs can still offer takeaway and delivery - but takeaway of alcohol will not be allowed.

Any business which breaches the rules will be subject to prohibition notices and potentially unlimited fines. The police will also have powers to enforce the law – including dispersing gatherings.

"I know how tough this is and how frustrated you are... but now, more than ever, we must pull together," said Mr Johnson.
