British Gas owner Centrica has told staff at an inner city service centre that they could be relocated.

The utility giant 鈥 which previously announced it was cutting its head count by 1,500-2,000 this year 鈥 said no redundancies were planned as part of the plan to move staff from Aylestone Road, Leicester, to offices just outside the city.

A spokeswoman said: 鈥淟ast month we spoke to a team of colleagues in customer services in Leicester, Aylestone Road, to let them know our plans to consolidate that team into our Spinneyside office [at Grove Park, near junction 21 of the M1].

鈥淲e will be updating our people in Leicester in 2020 and there is nothing to confirm until then and no decisions have been made.

鈥淲e always tell our people first when there are any changes that impact them.鈥

She said there were around 400 people working at the Aylestone Road site, in British Gas customer service teams.

The site is owned by National Grid.

Earlier this year multi-million pound plans were revealed to regenerate at least some of the brown field site which, until 2016, was also home to two big gasometers.

One member of staff working in the British Gas services team said workers were concerned about what would happen to them.

The person said the team provided support for customers who need engineers sending out for repairs and maintenance or services.

They said: 鈥淲e鈥檝e been told that the whole office is being closed down.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been told they are definitely closing the site down, however they have not told us if we have jobs or not.

鈥淭hey must know what鈥檚 going to happen but nobody is saying.

鈥淭here is a British Gas business office at Grove Park but that is a different part of the business. We are the 24/7 call centre.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a rubbish situation for us to be in just before Christmas. I鈥檝e worked here for years and it鈥檚 a really good place to work.

鈥淲e were told by e-mail in October that the office would be closing down by the end of the first quarter of next year, which is when we will be informed about what鈥檚 happening to us.鈥

The Centrica spokeswoman said they were committed to retaining a regional presence in Leicester and staff would be updated early next year.
