A Bristol restaurant is shutting down after more than four decades of serving diners.

Andy Firetto, head chef and proprietor of Don Giovanni's, opposite Temple Meads station, confirmed the closure via Facebook.

Don Giovanni's, which Bristol Live readers ranked as the city's finest Italian, will serve its last meal on January 18.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I make this announcement," Mr Firetto said.

"Due to circumstances beyond my control, my beloved Don Giovanni's Restaurant will permanently close its doors on the 18th January 2026, marking the end of an incredible journey spanning 44 years", reports .

"To all have visited over the years, your love and loyal support has meant the world to us, it's been a privilege to have been part of your celebrations, birthdays, anniversaries and countless 'just because' dinners, thank you for believing in us and making Don Giovannis part of your story."

While Mr Firetto did not detail the precise circumstances behind the closure in his announcement, the restaurant's fate has appeared increasingly uncertain since property developers Dandara purchased the building, a former car dealership.

Dandara has secured planning consent to construct more than 400 new flats on the site, with approximately 10 per cent designated for social rent.

The beloved restaurant, which has weathered years of disruptive roadworks, a pandemic and numerous other challenges, appears to have met its end due to the extensive development around Temple Meads.

On the occasion of the restaurant's 40th anniversary, Mark Taylor from Bristol Live awarded it an impressive five-star rating. The public's enthusiasm for Don Giovanni's is evident in its longevity and an impressive average star rating of 4.6 from over 750 Google reviews.

Mr Firetto stated that his immediate focus is to spend some much-needed quality time with his friends and family.

"To my hugely talented and dedicated team, I am immensely proud and eternally grateful for your commitment and what we have achieved together, take a bow each and every one of you.

"The next chapter is not yet written, but for now I will be taking some much needed time out to recharge and spend some long awaited quality time with my loved ones."

In his native Italian, Mr Firetto concluded his post by expressing heartfelt thanks to his customers.

"May the shadow of Don Giovannis never grow less," he penned. "Ciao ciao for now. Grazie di cuore, Andy".

Mr Firetto was contacted for further comment.
