Birmingham Hippodrome chief executive Stuart Griffiths will join ATG in July

The chief executive of is to step down from the role after 12 years leading the theatre.

Stuart Griffiths OBE is to become programming director for Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) whose venues include the New Alexandra in Birmingham, Empire in Liverpool and Opera House in Manchester.

Since his appointment in 2002, following a multi-million pound refurbishment, Mr Griffiths has led the Hippodrome to become one of the most popular single theatres in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ with record-breaking paid admissions last year exceeding 625,000.

He has also firmly established the theatre as a centre for dance, co-producing the award-winning International Dance Festival Birmingham since 2008 with Hippodrome resident partners DanceXchange.

Mr Griffiths' career in regional theatre management also included ten years as chief executive of the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe.

He is chairman of º£½ÇÊÓÆµ touring producer Music & Lyrics and co-chairman of international dance promoter The Dance Consortium.

He will take up his new role with ATG in July and the search to find his replacement is now under way and being led by Hippodrome chairman John Crabtree.

Mr Griffiths said: "I feel hugely privileged to have had the opportunity to work with a fantastic team at Birmingham Hippodrome for over 12 years which have been the most exciting and rewarding of my career.
