Birmingham bar and restaurant Nocturnal Animals has closed

Announcement follows departure of chef and founder Alex Claridge last week

Nocturnal Animals has closed after less than a year of trading

A cocktail bar and restaurant in Birmingham city centre has shut down after less than a year of trading.

The news of Nocturnal Animals' closure comes just days after its founder and chef Alex Claridge announced he was stepping away from the business.

The renowned Birmingham chef said he had taken the decision to focus solely on his other restaurant, The Wilderness in the city's Jewellery Quarter.

Nocturnal Animals with a ground floor cocktail bar themed around the 1980s and a fine-dining restaurant in its basement.

But this week it posted two brief tweets announcing that the venue was now closed.

They said: "Since Alex Claridge's departure the business owners for Nocturnal Animals have regrettably taken the decision to close the venue for the foreseeable whilst they make a plan.

"We want to thank everyone for the support shown since opening and our team for all their hard work and dedication.

"For anyone that has remaining gift vouchers for the venue these will be honoured at The Wilderness."
