Outdoor clothing brand Barbour has joined up with a fellow South Shields legend - film director Sir Ridley Scott - to launch a new product.

The company, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, has worked with Sir Ridley, who was born in Barbour鈥檚 home town, along with his children Jordan and Luke, on the Director鈥檚 Jacket collection.

The link-up follows similar partnerships between Barbour and ceramics designer Emma Bridgewater, plus former model and TV host Alex Chung, on collections that are aiming to widen the brand鈥檚 appeal.

The end product - with men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 versions, both of which are selling for 拢449 - is designed with a number of features for people working on film sets, with the company saying it should also appeal to film aficionados.

Director's Jacket designed by Sir Ridley Scott and Barbour

As well as a pocket for scripts and other items a director would need on set, the jackets feature an illustration of a bird done by Sir Ridley.

Sir Ridley - whose long directing career has included films such as Thelma and Louise, Gladiator and Alien - said: 鈥淚鈥檓 delighted to have been invited by Barbour to help celebrate 125 years of this great British brand.

鈥淭he director鈥檚 jacket is truly spectaculy, specifically designed with directors in mind.鈥

Barbour, which employs more than 150 people in South Shields and is one of the North East鈥檚 most recognisable brands on a national and international stage, was founded in 1894. It is still run by the same family - now in its fifth generation - and its famous waxed jackets are worn by the Queen and other members of the Royal family.

Gary Janes, Barbour鈥檚 menswear design and development manager, worked on designing the Director鈥檚 Jacket collection with Sir Ridley and his family.

He said: 鈥淲e designed the jackets so they would be of great use for days on set. The colour of the jackets is black to absorb light and make sure it isn鈥檛 reflective when working with on-set lighting.

鈥淭his also had to be considered for the zipper and studs, to ensure there was no reflection. The material used for these is military grade, and is often used on garments for soldiers so reflections do not give away their location.鈥
