The move coincides with another major announcement for the burgeoning business. Its reputation has been served a further boost with an award win this month - its Plymouth Pale Ale has been crowned the title of Taste of the West Champion Beer 2021. Taste of the West champions food and drink producers in the West Country, and its awards are a badge of honour for the best brands.
On the ascent, the Steel Brew Co brand has steadily grown and this expansion into Mills Bakery is the next stage in its journey. It also means the next and final stage of redevelopment for the Melville building, the centrepiece of Royal William Yard.
A mixed-use destination, Melville is set to feature shops, manufacturers, leisure and hospitality operators, sat alongside flexible workspaces. Everyman cinema, Hubbox, and BLOCK Plymouth are all poised to open in the coming year.
Emily Jones, commercial director at Urban Splash, said: “We are delighted that Steel Brew Co is growing within the Yard; this is a business that has gone from strength to strength, even in tough times. We are proud to have given this incredible independent their first platform and help them move forward.
“The yard has an incredible blend of businesses and our independents are part of what gives this place an amazing atmosphere and unique character.”

Nick Palfrey, Steel Brew Co, said: “What a journey it’s been. We’ve loved every minute that we have been able to moonshine by candle light in our old home – but it’s time to move into a space designed for us and grow the business. The exciting redevelopment of Melville combined with our need to increase our brewing capacity means this is the right move at the right time.
“Over the next few weeks our team will start the transition to our new venue, where we can all enjoy great craft beer in another iconic setting. We have big plans for Steel Brew Co, with a series of award wins and plans ahead for a summer of festival appearances, and much more up our sleeves. We’re grateful for all the support so far and can’t wait for this new chapter.”
