Online retail giant Amazon has announced plans to open a fourth fulfilment centre in the East Midlands creating more than 1,000 new jobs.

The firm has said it intends to create a state-of-the-art robotics fulfilment centre at Summit Park, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

The company already has sites at Chesterfield, in Derbyshire and at Kegworth and Coalville, both in Leicestershire.

The new Sutton-in-Ashfield site, which will offer 550,000 sq ft of space, will be similar to the firm’s Kegworth operation at East Midlands Gateway.

It will be equipped with advanced Amazon robotics technology, which is able to pick items and move them through the fulfilment centre.

Amazon has said that the 1,000-plus jobs to be created are permanent roles.

The firm said it has already started recruiting for a range of new roles for the fulfilment centre, including engineers, HR and IT professionals through to health and safety and finance specialists and operations managers.

The company said that recruitment for staff who will pick, pack and ship customer orders will begin later this month.
