£800k Cantilupe House in Henley-in-Arden

Some unusual and very personal additions have created a striking village property in Henley-in-Arden, reports Alison Jones

After failing to find the perfect house in their desired location back in 1967, David and Sandra Brotheridge decided that they would build their own.

They had been looking to buy a property in Aston Cantlow, , which was David’s home village. When they were unsuccessful they instead bought a plot of land with a dilapidated wooden weekend cottage on it.

“We knocked it down it down but it would have fallen down if you had blown too hard on it,” recalls David.

They were left with a three quarter of an acre plot on which to build their ideal home.

“We did most of it ourselves except for the brickwork. I am a consultant in the construction industry so I knew what I am doing.

“We thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife on the scaffolding offloading tiles as I hauled them up on a winch. We had a great time and at the end of the day we got what we wanted.”

Since then they have extended twice, creating a house to meet their needs as a family and to create space for hobbies and leisure activities.

“The original build was a three bedrooms and one bathroom, a lounge and dining room/kitchen,” says David.
