£525k home in Selly Park is environmentally friendly

Local green pioneers are leaving their showcase home for others to enjoy the literal fruits of their labours, reports Alison Jones

A couple who have been dubbed “Mr and Mrs Green” have used their own home to showcase their energy saving and environmentally friendly ideas.

Now that showcase is up for sale as they plan a move up to York.

Audrey Miller, who used to lecture in environmental science, and her husband Duncan, took part in a green homes scheme earlier this year. They opened their house in Over Mill Drive, Selly Park, to the public so they could see some of their initiatives and perhaps adopt them in their own homes.

“We were one of 12 properties featured,” says Audrey. “People could come and talk to us and seek our advice. We found it very encouraging that people were taking an interest.

“We have always been very active in all sorts of green endeavours but we particularly went to town in our home.”

The modifications to conserve energy and make the four-bedroom detached more environmentally friendly have all been made by the Millers, rather than being incorporated into the house as it was built.

They include solar panels to the roof, a solar hot water system, loft insulation, reflective surfaces behind radiators and growing all their own fruit and vegetables in their organic garden.

“We virtually don’t have any electricity or gas bills,” says Audrey. “We also get an income of well over £1,000 a year by inputting the solar panel energy into the national grid.
