Hundreds of thousands of pounds is being given to independent cinemas in the West of England to help recover from the Covid pandemic.

The 10 venues - in Devon, Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Cornwall - will receive a share of nearly £500,000 in the second round of funding from the Government’s £1.57bn Cultural Recovery Fund.

Cinemas in the region have previously received more than £3m, the department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said.

The historic Regal Cinema in Wadebridge, Cornwall, will receive more than £84,000. Its director Robert Williams said: "The Regal Cinema is grateful for an award from the Cultural Recovery Fund as the cinema tries to navigate its way through the huge difficulties of the last 12 months.

“The cinema has been part of Wadebridge for over 90 years and we look forward to serving the town and its community for many more years to come."

The DCMS said grants totalling £27.6m had now been awarded to independent cinemas in England, administered by the BFI on its behalf.

Culture secretary Oliver Dowden, said: “Our record breaking Culture Recovery Fund has already helped thousands of culture and heritage organisations across the country survive the biggest crisis they've ever faced.

“Now we’re staying by their side as they prepare to welcome the public back through their doors - helping our cultural gems plan for reopening and thrive in the better times ahead.”
