A construction company has been signed to put up the main building at Nottinghamshire’s ‘world-class’ £17m sports and education village.

RG Carter Construction is leading building work on the 59,000 sq ft building going at the YMCA Community and Activity Village, in Lord Hawke Way in Newark.

The new building has been designed by lead consultants Rayner Davies Architects, in Nottingham, supported by Pulse Consult, Axis M&E Engineers, Tunstall Smith King Structural Engineers, William Saunders Civil Engineers and Influence Landscape Consultants.

A number of outdoor sports facilities, including all-weather football pitches and an athletics track, opened in October 2018, as part of the first phase of the community and activity village.

Work is now starting on the next stage to create a range of education facilities.

The activity village was designed to be a home for a variety of not-for-profit services, including a nursery, community café, art, music and media spaces, education and apprenticeships, with an indoor sports hall with an Olympic standard climbing centre.

Todd Cauthorn, executive director for YMCA Newark and Sherwood, said work starting on the main building was a big step forward for the project.

He said: “It feels good to be working with a local business in RG Carter on such a large-scale project that will create jobs, youth apprenticeships and transformational life opportunities in addition to strengthening the already fantastic community spirit in Newark.
