Public invited to comment on 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunity' to map out future of Notts barracks site

Proposals are also part of a longer-term vision for that part of the East Midlands which could create 84,000 jobs

How the HS2 hub at Toton could look

The next step in the transformation of a Nottinghamshire barracks site to create new homes and jobs has begun.

Planners have launched a formal public consultation into the future of the Chetwynd Barracks site on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border.

The military site will close in 2024 and a masterplan is being drawn which could see thousands of carbon neutral homes, green spaces, new schools, healthcare facilities and cycle paths covering an area taking in parts of Toton, Chilwell, Stapleford, Sandiacre and Long Eaton.

The proposals are also part of a longer-term vision for that part of the East Midlands which could also see redevelopment of and around Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station and East Midlands Airport, with the ultimate aim of creating 84,000 jobs and adding £4.8 billion to the value of the regional economy.

Some 80,000 residents are now being asked for their views on the plans by Broxtowe Borough Council – despite a question mark over whether the HS2 eastern leg will actually stop at a big new station at Toton.

The consultation into the Strategic Masterplan will run until Monday, December 13.

The council said it was a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to map out the future for the area”.

The Masterplan has been developed over the last four years with Nottinghamshire County Council, supported by Erewash Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council.
