Nottingham Castle nearing end of £30m restoration

Derbyshire contractor G F Tomlinson has handed over the project after completing construction phase

Nottingham Castle is undergoing a £30m restoration

Work to make Nottingham Castle a world-class visitor destination is nearing completion.

Derbyshire contractor G F Tomlinson has handed over the project as part of a £30 million renovation.

The work has been funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, D2N2, Nottingham Castle Trust and Nottingham City Council and has involved significant mechanical and electrical works, specialist restoration, improved access to the underground cave network and a new visitors centre.

The completion of the construction phase keeps the project on track for the castle to re-open early next year.

When finished it is expected to attract more than 400,000 visitors a year, and celebrate 1,000 years of Nottingham history.

G F Tomlinson was appointed by project lead Nottingham City Council, and preservation of the site was paramount throughout the project.

One of the most complex elements of the build was work to the Grade I listed Ducal Palace, which has been extended to house the new Robin Hood and Rebellion galleries, telling the story of the city’s legendary outlaw.

Working closely with Historic England, stonework and lime plaster restoration was undertaken to bring the building back to its former glory.
