BusinessLive looks back at the highs and many lows of 2020 in the East Midlands

Part three – May-June:

By May the country was in the midst of lockdown. Parents were struggling to teach their kids at home, while holding down jobs. Companies were forced to furlough staff, racking up billions in debts for the Government. And shops and bars were shut.

Leicester Tigers

One of the biggest clubs in Europe warned it could suffer a £10 million hit if was unable get fans back into matches before the end of 2020.

The predicted lost revenue was double the amount the club estimated it had lost just one month earlier. Tigers confirmed the Covid-19 crisis had led to five players – Kyle Eastmond, Noel Reid, Manu Tuilagi, Greg Batemen and Telusa Veainu – leaving the club.

A further 31 members of staff had been made redundant because of the huge financial hit from the pandemic. The club said because of the size of its stadium and fan base it had been affected more than most Premiership Rugby clubs, already losing around £5 million since the last match was held at the Welford Road ground in March.

Chief executive Andrea Pinchen warned if things dragged on – especially with Leicester in a fresh local lockdown – things would get very bleak.
