Derby Market Hall and Eastern Gateway get £15m funding

Part of the money will help turn the Market Hall into an attractive, flexible retail and leisure destination

Derby Market Hall

The city of Derby has been given £15 million towards two major city centre projects.

The Market Hall transformation and Eastern gateway projects have picked up the backing from the Future High Streets Fund.

The Government has confirmed both projects will receive the grant, after previously giving provisional backing.

The money will help turn the Market Hall into an attractive, flexible retail and leisure destination and to create a new gateway to the city centre.

Market Hall traders are now getting ready to re-locate to the Eagle Market in the Derbion Centre after the Victorian venue closes on Saturday, June 5, to allow the essential repair work to take place.

The Eastern Gateway will transform the entrance to the Eagle Market, creating a welcoming arrival from the bus station. Public realm improvements will be undertaken with remaining funds.

Derby City Council deputy leader Matthew Holmes said: “It has been a tough time for the high street but this is another step forward in delivering Derby’s recovery plan.

“Transforming the Market Hall and creating the Eastern Gateway will attract more people onto the high streets and diversify our economy.
