A controversial £100m plan to construct more than 300 apartments on Liverpool's waterfront has been unanimously rejected.

Developer Romal Capital had been seeking permission for the scheme scheme which would have featured 330 flats.

It would also have seen the infilling of the West Waterloo Dock, which falls within the major Liverpool Waters development area.

The proposal would have involved the construction of two nine-storey blocks and one four-storey building at the dock.

However, members of Liverpool City Council's planning committee unanimously voted down the scheme at a meeting on Tuesday, January 18. The case will now be heard at an independent inquiry.

The move came after council planning officers formally recommended that the proposal be refused.

The planning report gave a number of reasons as to why the scheme should be thrown out, including adverse impacts on the local environment.

The report added that the proportion of one-bedroom flats within the planned development would '"fail to satisfy the City's aim of providing a broader housing offer to encourage a more diverse residential population in the city centre."
