A historic cinema in Birmingham city centre and three cinema chains have closed their venues in the West Midlands as the coronavirus crisis escalates.

The Electric, said to be the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's oldest working cinema, along with Cineworld, Vue and Odeon have all shut up shop until further notice.

The Electric, which turned 110 years old last year, had initially vowed to remain open.

The company posted on its social media page that it had "remained open through two world wars and the Spanish flu of 1918-1920" and would do so until "the authorities turn up at our door".

But in a change of heart a day later, it announced that it would follow the suit of the rest cinema industry and shut temporarily.

The Electric said: "With the entire cinema industry shutting down, it has now become impossible for us to continue any longer.

"We will be entering hibernation, hopefully to awaken later in the year.

"There are a few advance bookings for films this week and we would deeply appreciate if customers would be prepared to offer the cost of those tickets as a donation to keep us in hibernation for as long as needed.
