Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has called for resignations as the fall out of Number 10's alleged Christmas party last year continues.

The mayor added the news coming out of Westminster is making the jobs of front line NHS staff in the city region "even harder".

Mr Burnham also called on residents to not get distracted" by the news and to continue to help the city to fight against the pandemic.

Speaking to journalists at a virtual press conference, the mayor called for more information to be released by Number 10 as well as "accountability for what happened" and resignations "if necessary".

Mr Burnham said the news is having a "dispiriting" impact on people in Greater Manchester.

He also said the number of suspected Omicron cases in the city region had gone from two last week to "high double figures".

Mr Burnham told journalists: "I can understand the frustration people have. So many people have sacrificed so much in the North West. [This time last year] was really hard for people."
