£10.6m International Air and Space Training Institute in Newark another step closer

World’s first facility of its kind will train the next generation of young people to work in aerospace and space industries

Plans for a £10.6 million air and space training centre have taken another step forward.

A business case for the International Air and Space Training Institute (IASTI) facility in Newark has been approved by independent assessors.

Newark and Sherwood District Council will discuss the next stage of the plans at a policy and finance committee on January 27, after the assessment said the project would offer “value for money and has demonstrated its deliverability”.

ASTI Newark will be the world’s first facility of its kind training the next generation of young people to work in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ’s aerospace and space industries.

Working closely with industry it will help meet education and training needs in areas such as engineering, pilot and ground operations roles.

The centre will be a partnership between the Lincoln College Group, Royal Air Force, East Midlands Airport, Inzpire, AAR, Leonardo, Eagle Eye, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and the National Space Centre.

Newark College’s interim IASTI site has already taken delivery of a £35,000 flight simulator where students get can hands-on with the tools and technologies used within the aviation industry.

It is one of nine priority projects being developed by Newark Towns Fund Board and funded through the Government’s Towns Fund initiative.
