The Northern Health Science Alliance (NHSA) has welcomed three new directors to take forward the organisation into the next stage of its development as a world-leading cluster organisation across the North’s life sciences.
Professor Sir John Tooke, Dr Kath Mackay and Dr Jonathan Sheffield OBE have joined the organisation as non-executive directors and will play a key role in developing the strategic direction of the NHSA.
The NHSA is a partnership established by the leading Universities and NHS Hospital Trusts in the North of England and aims to improve the health and wealth of the region by creating an internationally recognised life science and healthcare system.

It links ten universities and ten research-intensive NHS Teaching Trusts with four Academic Health Science Networks.
The organisation brings together health research collaborations across the region, draws in international investment to the North and acts as a voice for its health research system.
Professor David Burn, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University ad chair of the NHSA board, said: “I am thrilled to welcome our three new directors to the board of the Northern Health Science Alliance.
“Each of them brings a wealth of experience which will be invaluable to the Northern Health Science Alliance as we move forward in our vision of health and equality for all through the power of northern health innovation.”
Law firm Brabners has appointed a new partner to its pensions team as that practice group continues to experience significant revenue growth.

Caroline Curran joins from PwC’s Manchester office where she was a director and head of pensions legal in the North as part of PwC’s 15-strong national pensions legal team.
Prior to that she spent nine years in the pensions practice at Eversheds Sutherland.
The appointment comes as Brabners seeks to maintain the strong growth of its pensions practice. The team, headed up by partner Ian Mylrea, increased fee income by 85 per cent over the two-year period ending March 2020.

Deloitte has continued to invest in its real estate team in Manchester, with the appointment of Ahmed Alshawi to its capital projects advisory arm and the relocation of Lauren Mays from the firm’s London office to join its development team.
Ahmed joins Deloitte from Mott MacDonald, where he spent two years as a senior structural engineer. Prior to that, he started his career as a structural engineer at Atkins, having completed a masters’ degree in civil engineering at the University of Leeds.

Lauren has come through Deloitte’s ‘Brightstart’ apprenticeship programme, joining the firm in 2012. During her time in London, she has gained experience of working across the firm’s service lines, including valuation advisory, asset and property management, development and real estate consulting.
She has been involved in some of the most high profile infrastructure projects, including working alongside Transport for London to identify development opportunities for housing, and supporting the planning and development of the future Euston station for HS2.
In their new roles, Ahmed and Lauren will support the Deloitte Real Estate team in Manchester as it looks to expand its projects and expertise in the region, and support the resilience of the region’s property sector in the face of COVID-19.
Napthens Health and Safety, the health and safety arm of north west regional law firm Napthens, has appointed Chris Walker to lead the continued growth of the service.
Following the acquisition of ATG Health and Safety by Napthens last May, the service has expanded its diverse package of support for employers across the region and has now rebranded as Napthens Health and Safety.
Working closely with the law firm’s commercial teams, including employment and HR, Chris Walker will lead a specialist team providing a full health and safety service including audits, site visits, training and consultation.
Chris said: “The importance of health and safety of employees has never been more important than it is right now. From staff who are working from home, to workplaces that need to implement new safety measures to beat the virus, our team is experienced in making the workplace a safe environment for all concerned.
“We have experienced growing demand over the past year, and with our innovative approach continue to develop a flexible and agile service as we transition out of the current crisis so we can respond and support our clients whatever their specific needs.”
DSW Debt Advisory – the new service launched just before the lockdown to help companies raise debt funding – has attracted another senior banking figure.
Simon Carrier, who recently departed his post as regional managing director of Shawbrook Bank, has joined as a Partner to help meet the growing demand. Simon’s 25-year banking career includes spells at RBS, Bank of Ireland and Santander where, as Regional Director of its corporate and commercial arm, he helped introduce its business banking service across Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire.
DSW Debt Advisory, which is part of the Dow Schofield Watts group, is aimed at companies typically seeking debt funding of £5m to £200m. It was launched in February by another former senior banker, Phil Tarimo, who now plans to extend the service into other regions.
