Winstanley House hosted the guests, judges and finalists for the 2023 Leicestershire Law Society Awards.

The hotel was packed with the leading figures from the city and county legal scene, with the awards were organised and presented by Gina Samuel-Richards, Leicestershire Law Society’s first president of African heritage.

The 2023 winners were: - Large Law Firm of the Year: Smith Partnership; Small Law Firm of the Year: Josiah Hincks; Junior Solicitor of the Year: Marcus Blakelock, Weightmans LLP; Trainee/Paralegal: Chloe Lake, Wilson Browne Solicitors; Support Staff Member of the Year: Madeleine Ingall, Parity Legal; Chambers of the Year: 2 New Street Chambers; Solicitor of the Year: Rakesh Veja, Thaliwal & Veja Solicitors; Legal Executive of the Year: Ahmed Mangera, Weightmans LLP; Barrister of the Year: Mr Oliver Nunn, KCH Garden Square.

A President’s Lifetime Achievement Award was presented in memory of Mukesh Patel, managing partner of the Leicester office of law firm Freeths, who died earlier this spring, aged 54. It was accepted by his sons Rishi and Rahul Patel.

Lisa Gilligan, the new managing partner of Freeths Leicester, said: “This honour for Mukesh is truly well deserved.

“An inspiration to many, Mukesh was a trusted and valued member of our management team. He was an exemplary team player and would always place his personal interests second to those around him for the common good.

“We lost a real force for good in the Freeths community, but his legacy will most certainly live on throughout the Leicester business community.”
