A team of 17 lawyers at an East Midlands law firm have recovered £24.3 million in damages for clients over the last year, making it their best on record.

The personal injury and clinical negligence department at Nelsons, which works across its three offices in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester, has secured settlements for 215 clients in the past year, securing an average of £113,000 per case

Lisa Preece, partner and solicitor who heads up the team, said: “The main goal for us is to get justice for our clients and the past year has shown how we can achieve that in recovering substantial damages for them.

“We’ve acted on behalf of a broad range of clients who have been injured in accidents or as a result of negligence and been able to support them with a successful claim to help them move forward.

“We deal with claims that arise from reasonably modest injuries all the way through to catastrophic, life changing injuries where the damages award is often in seven figures.

“So, this achievement is a real reflection of the broad cross section of the work we do to help our clients get the results they need to compensate them and improve their lives.”

The past year also saw the department gain national recognition when senior associate and solicitor Dianne Collins fought off competition from across the country to win ‘Claimant Lawyer of the Year’ at the Personal Injury Awards last November.

A contributing factor to her win was her work representing 78 survivors of the Aston Hall child abuse scandal reflecting her specialism in historical child abuse claims.

Nelsons’ chief executive Stewart Vandermark said: “For a relatively small team of 17 to be producing the results we’ve seen in the past year is absolutely remarkable.

“At Nelsons, we are dedicated to empowering our clients – giving them a voice, fighting for them, helping them seek justice and steering them through the complex legal issues that they face.

“The success Lisa and her team have enjoyed shows what a fantastic, dedicated department they are.”

For the past four months, the team has continued to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ms Preece said: “Just a few years ago we were securing £2 million for clients in 12 months.

“To be able to say that we’ve increased that figure by 1,110 per cent over the past year is a real testament to the hard work put in by everyone.

“I’d like to say thank you to all the members of the team and look forward to seeing what the next year brings for us.”
