Closing Hinckley Cadent HQ would be 'hammer blow' says union

Many staff there are already facing redundancy as part of a separate restructuring of the business

Union leaders have said closing the Cadent headquarters in Leicestershire would be a hammer blow for workers.

The gas supply company is considering shutting the Hinckley HQ where around 1,000 staff are normally based.

The company has launched a consultation on winding down its office in the town’s Brick Kiln Lane at some point next year.

Many staff there are already facing redundancy as part of a separate restructuring of the business.

The company is proposing to relocate some staff to its new base at Ansty, near Coventry – around nine miles away –with others working from home.

UNISON East Midlands regional organiser Ed Bratt said: “Some employees may be able to work from home after Brick Kiln Lane closes, but not everyone’s jobs can be done from their living rooms and kitchens.

“Others will have no option but to move to the new site - but it’s not served by public transport and not all staff have their own cars."

He said the news had come as a "bolt from the blue" to staff who were already reeling from job losses announced back in April.
