Cleaning firms call for key worker status

Companies are being hired to deep clean hospitals and schools to combat coronavirus

Cleaning firms call for key worker classification

Cleaning companies are calling for designated key worker status.

Companies are being hired to clean not only offices that remain open but also hospitals and schools that are taking care of the children of key workers.

Helen Williams, the founder and director of Clean Sweep, said cleaners are providing an important service to combat the coronavirus and should be officially classed as key workers.

Clean Sweep is preparing a ward at Singleton Hospital to be opened. Ms Williams' team also clean a warehouse that provides masks for the NHS, and clean schools.

But Ms Williams says her staff are also facing issues with childcare. Without the 'key worker' classification, her employees are having to rely on friends and family.

And Rayner Davies, of A&R Cleaning Services, says two of her staff were stopped on the way to clean a school that is open for the children of key workers.

"If cleaners were not providing their services in hospitals, schools and care homes, these industries would not be able to remain open," Mrs Davies added.

"Our cleaners are working on the frontline and are at risk. They go into areas where the coronavirus has been confirmned and do deep cleans."
