Birmingham Women's Hospital has taken delivery of a new £14,000 mobile unit for transporting babies in need of breathing support.

The equipment comes following a fundraising campaign by Birmingham Law Society and its members.

The society has raised more than £36,000 this year to help support the care of sick and premature babies at the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit in Edgbaston.

In addition to funding the mobile unit, which is used to move babies from the delivery suite to the neonatal unit safely after birth, the cash will be spent on hardware and software to allow doctors to view data on the babies they are caring for.

It will also support families who spend time on the unit with their newborns.

The hospital's 'Tiny Babies, Big Appeal' is the chosen charity of Mushtaq Khan, the president of Birmingham Law Society.

He said: "The neonatal intensive care unit at Birmingham Women's Hospital is the largest unit in the region caring for more than one thousand babies every year.

"Our members have really got behind this special charity, raising funds at sporting events, quizzes, bakes offs and balls.
