The British Business Bank has provided the 75,000th funding deal under its Start Up Loans (SUL) programme, which has now invested £623m since being launched in 2012.

The British Business Bank is the economic development bank of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government with a º£½ÇÊÓƵ-wide lending remit, which as well as loans also includes equity.

Its SUL programme provides up to £25,000 in debt to new businesses at an interest rate of 6%, providing vital finance in a marketplace where many banks don't operate.

SUL saw a significant rise in loans issued since the start of the pandemic in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ. May to July 2020 saw a total of £31.9m of funding drawn down, compared to £22.9m in the same period the previous year, an increase of more than 39%. July 2020 has been the record month for drawdowns since 2014, as restrictions eased and businesses started to re-open their doors to customers.

Of the people who received a loan since 2012, two fifths (40%) were women. One in five (20%) of recipients came from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities (BAME), of which 48% were from black ethnic groups, 23% from Asian ethnic and 29% from mixed ethnic groups. One third (33%) were unemployed when they applied for the loan, reflecting the diversity of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ start up community.

SUL has lent money and provided mentoring support to aspiring business owners in every nation and region of the United Kingdom and its impact has been particularly noticeable in areas of deprivation.

The North West received the highest number of loans outside of London with a volume of 9,219 (12%) worth £74m since 2012. The South East received 6,752 loans (9%) worth £60m, followed by the West Midlands where a total of 6,198 loans (8%) were provided for a value of £50m.

Some 3,443 (5%) have been issued to entrepreneurs in Wales, meaning £32.2m has been invested since 2012.
