HMRC has opened its huge new regional headquarters in Bristol city centre.

The 3 Glass Wharf building at Temple Quay is the second of 13 centres to open across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ as part of a 10-year government transformation programme to save more than £300million by 2025 and make annual savings of about £90million by 2026.

The high-tech hub will be home to around 1,650 employees and will allow the department to work more effectively, according to HMRC.

Jim Harra, HMRC's chief executive and first permanent secretary, visited the site near Temple Meads along other members of the organisation's executive committee.

He said: “I’m incredibly proud to be opening the Bristol Regional Centre. This building will be a great place to work and I look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on Bristol and its local economy.

"It will bring teams together so they have the opportunity to work differently and more effectively, making HMRC a tax and customs administration fit for the future.”

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees said:   “We are delighted to see another major employer open a base in the city and, following the recent arrival of Channel 4, it’s another example of Bristol’s ability to attract major employers and jobs.

“We look forward to the opportunity of working with HMRC to help them tap into the diverse range of talent available throughout this city to open up further job opportunities.’’
