Why time is right to upgrade slow and indirect Coventry to Leicester and Nottingham rail services

Research suggests just 3 per cent of trips from Leicester to Coventry are currently made by train

A big drive is under way to improve the poor rail services linking Coventry with Leicester and Nottingham.

There has been no direct link between Leicester and Coventry for 18 years, and average rail speeds between the two are just 18.4mph.

Campaigners say the region is missing out on huge economic benefits because of the difficulty of travelling between the East and West Midlands cities.

Plans to reintroduce direct trains and slash journey times between Coventry, Leicester and Nottingham will be discussed in Parliament today by local business and political leaders and MPs.

Nottingham North MP Alex Norris, who is chairing the event, has called for “urgent intervention to move these plans along and speed the route to delivery”.

He said poor journey times between the cities and the need to change trains part way through the journey mean that just 3 per cent of trips from Leicester to Coventry are currently made by train.

He cited a new poll of 600 people living in the region, which he said showed 75 per cent would be more inclined to travel by rail across the corridor if the journey was direct.

Regional transport body Midlands Connect has drawn up plans that would see direct services run between Coventry, Leicester and Nottingham for the first time in two decades. The scheme would see the creation of a dive-under at Nuneaton, creating space for trains to pass through the station – at the moment, passengers have to get off one train at Nuneaton and onto another to continue their journey.
