Three key elements have united to push renewables as the leading economic antidote - with the Humber well equipped to provide the emergency room for Covid recovery.

That was the overriding message as Offshore Wind Connections opened on the Energy Estuary, with delegates told how the region is at the forefront of the sector - backed up with huge decarbonisation proposals and an emerging hydrogen role.

The annual conference blasted back on a slick virtual platform after a pandemic pause in 2020, with Renewableº£½ÇÊÓƵ deputy chief executive Melanie Onn - a two-term former Grimsby MP - getting it underway.

She told how in her first year in the role not a month had gone by without a significant announcement that would play out on patch.

“It is an incredibly exciting time in the world of renewables,” she said, with nods to the roles played by the likes of Greta Thunberg, Extinction Rebellion and the wider David Attenborough-led heightened environmental awareness.

“Three things came together to bring all of this focus and all of this attention to the sector,” Ms Onn said.

“The first is climate change, and the people-powered activism we have seen in the streets, that has breached through into the public’s consciousness.

"I think that Covid has changed people’s perceptions of their immediate environment and also made the government much more aware of the action it needs to take to get the economy back up and running after this very prolonged period of time that lots of us have been working from home or have been furloughed.
