The Port of Tyne has unveiled its Tyne 2050 strategic plan which strives to make the Tyne a gateway to help transform both the region and the maritime industry.

The deep sea port’s chief executive Matt Beeton revealed the firm’s goals for the future at a special event for stakeholders at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts and later today, Thursday, December 5,  it will launch the plan nationally with a reception in London.

Tyne 2050 is fully aligned to the Government’s Maritime 2050 strategy and to the North East Economic plan.

Mr Beeton said: “A lot of things are changing around the world - business, technology, and politics are definitely changing. With all that change, if businesses want to survive they have to do something different and if you want to thrive you have to do it now.

“Tyne 2050 is almost an extension of Maritime 2050 and we are setting ourselves some targets and one of the reasons for that is because we want to be judged by those targets.

“If we are the first to announce these targets we hope others will follow. We want to lead the Maritime 2050 journey.”

“We want to be carbon neutral by 2030. We want to double diversity by 2050. We want to run elements of Blockchain in our business in the next 10 years, and we want to be zero harm.”

As well as these targets Port of Tyne’s strategy also includes being recognised for collaboration with partners such as Nissan, Accenture, Royal Haskoning, and Teesport. It is also aiming to be a great place to work for its employees while also supporting its local supporting the local community.
