Online giant Amazon has confirmed it is opening a robotics centre in County Durham, with more than 1,000 jobs on offer.

The 550,000 sq ft centre at the Integra 61 site next to the A1 is one of three the company is creating in the North East.

An Amazon site opened in Darlington in May and it has also acquired land in Gateshead. The company said it will next month start recruiting for the Durham site, which will have a range of roles available.

Stefano Perego, Amazon’s vice president of Europe customer fulfilment, said: “We are excited to continue our expansion in the North East of England, creating a further 1,000 new permanent roles, this time in Durham.

“Our employees work in modern, high-tech workplaces, receiving competitive wages and comprehensive benefits from day one.

“These new state-of-the-art robotics fulfilment centres in the North East are another sign of our commitment to the people and communities in which we operate, employing thousands of talented individuals in a diverse range of roles from operations managers and tech professionals through to our frontline employees who manage customer orders.”

Amazon opened a distribution centre in Darlington in May and has also bought land in Gateshead to build another site.

Durham County Council leader Simon Henig said: “Amazon’s decision to locate its second north east fulfilment centre at the Integra 61 site is a clear reflection of confidence in County Durham, our workforce and our prospects for the future.
