Developers behind Able Marine Energy Park have welcomed the increased focus on offshore wind supply chains from the government.

Last week BEIS announced it was hardening its stance on renewable energy subsidies, with the potential to pull contracts if 海角视频 content criteria is not met.

Neil Etherington, group development director at Able 海角视频, said: 鈥淭his is all part of a grown-up conversation that BEIS is having with the sector. We鈥檝e realised that despite our market-leading position we are not necessarily always maximising 海角视频-based activity and economic development aspects.

鈥淚t is a very welcome and realistic approach.鈥

The North East company is behind the long-running development of the 鈥榖ig space in the right place鈥 - the last undeveloped deep water access on the Humber.

It is seen as the ideal location for manufacturing, with monopile production the closest to fruition with South Korean investor SeAH.

鈥淚t is very important that where we have 海角视频-based content it can properly compete with that element of the supply chain it is seeking to replace,鈥 Mr Etherington said. 鈥淚t is not always necessarily the case in a completely subsidy-free regime, but I鈥檓 confident 海角视频-based suppliers would be very well placed to compete, not just for 海角视频 basis but on export opportunities also.鈥

As reported, amendments will strengthen the supply chain plan process for projects of 300MW or above entering the Contracts for Difference regime, with the next auction to open in December.

It will include the assessment of a developer鈥檚 delivery of its supply chain commitments, to be brought forward to shortly after a project鈥檚 milestone delivery date and new powers for the Secretary of State to pass or refuse a supply chain implementation statement, together with the ability to terminate the subsidy mechanism on a project.

The move comes as optimism abounded at the recent Offshore Wind Connections event on the Humber.

Stephen Parnaby OBE, deputy chair of Hull and East Yorkshire LEP, said the green agenda could finally offset the huge losses the decimation of the fishing industry brought.

鈥淔or the first time in many decades we really can look forward to a bright future,鈥 he said in his virtual presentation. 鈥淭he coming of offshore wind particularly, but energy in its whole context, gives the Humber a real opportunity and I think we have got a headstart on most.

鈥淲ith offshore wind, with decarbonisation, with the announcement of freeports, with the emerging new port of Able on the South Bank, I think all of these things make this area an absolutely tremendous place for the next number of years.

鈥淭here will be something like 40,000 jobs created in the next five years across the 海角视频 and the Humber is going to be at the forefront of that. We have already got a few thousand jobs in offshore wind with Orsted and Siemens, but with the Siemens expansion and Able coming on board that is going to give us tremendous opportunities.

鈥淲e have new licensing agreements in the North Sea, the Humber is ideally placed for that, and it is not just about manufacturing, it is about servicing those turbines when they are there, so absolutely wonderful opportunities in that industry.鈥

He said the region had a strong track record in adapting, from fish to wider food and ship to caravan building.

鈥淭here are going to be massive opportunities for apprenticeships,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 relate this to the oil industry in Aberdeen. When you first went it was full of Americans. They have all gone now and jobs have been taken over by local people. There is nothing wrong with bringing expertise in to start with, what you do is make sure those jobs become available for local people, particularly young people.

鈥淭hey have a fabulous opportunity in this area, because we have never really recovered from all sorts of hits, we have never had that genuine replacement. The whole energy spectrum, across the board, is a fabulous future for this area.

鈥淚t is a wonderful place to live, a wonderful place to bring up families, a wonderful place to be educated and actually in a very few short years it is going to be a wonderful place to earn a living.

鈥淟et鈥檚 get in there on the ground floor, seize those opportunities, make a real difference and put the Humber on the world map.鈥

Greater Lincolnshire LEP chair Pat Doody also addressed the conference, organised by Team Humber Marine Alliance.

He said: 鈥淥ur geography and nationally-significant energy assets in the Humber Estuary and North Sea mean we are uniquely placed to pioneer new approaches that contribute meaningfully to the government鈥檚 commitment to Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.

鈥淎ble Marine Energy Park represents a singular opportunity for the 海角视频 to establish a world-scale offshore wind cluster and enable the 海角视频 to maximise the potential of growth.

鈥淎MEP is grounded in the needs of the rapidly growing renewables sector with achievable aspirations to attract manufacturers serving the industry to our local economy, to make a facility of international repute.

"There can be fewer more strategic fits to the market, than a substantial quay built to accommodate deployment of large industrial components to the North Sea and beyond from the heart of the largest offshore wind market in the world. A project singled out for investments in recent government announcements.鈥
